POS is not a scary monster after all

POS or a retail Point Of Sale system typically includes a cash register (which in recent times comprises a computer, monitor, cash drawer, receipt printer, customer display and a bar code scanner) and the majority of retail POS systems also include a debit/credit card reader.

Last week was my first week with this monster, or at least I thought it would be a big ugly  beast to tackle. When I started looking for work, cashier was the very last profession on my list. It was because of my fear of the POS machine and the fact I had to count money (not good with money lol) and that the job requires me to be nice to everybody 🙂 I would say I kind of landed on this job by mistake. I didn’t think I would get hired so I went to the interview with absolute confidence that I would get sent away. I mean I had no experience in this field. How could they hire me?  BUT THEY DID!!!

I have never worked in retail or have ever been a server. The month of working in a little corner store during high school, was a joke, of course, and that was so long ago that I wouldn’t even count it as experience! It’s not on my resume for sure lol

On the first day on the job I felt so awkward (I probably looked awkward as well) serving people and being a cashier because it felt so foreign to my being. Usually I am on the other side of the table. I have to say, not always a satisfied customer or a huge fan of long lineups.

And to add to my awkwardness I wasn’t very good with the POS in the beginning and I had to ask help all the time from my trainer. I had to suck all my usual feelings that come over me during these situations like humiliation and shyness and the ability to speak proper English (not my first language, or my second).

I was amazed that at “my age” my memory and my ability to learn is way better than I expected, and I am so proud of myself. I truly am.

I am proud that I did something completely outside of my box and that I am learning new things and skills. Hopefully this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship with this company. So far I feel blessed.  Everyone is so nice and welcoming and I actually have been enjoying myself. I will try to continuously be my good and smiling self and to not let other people drag me down.

Also I have a new found appreciation for cashiers! People don’t often realize how hard they work!
