I had a very rude wake up alarm this morning, around 6.45 am . Lightning and then the loudest and the longest thunder I have ever heard in my life. It got me out of bed very fast. It got our dog out of bed, going at the thunder with barking….like that will scare it off.
I started thinking about thunder. We are so scared of thunder, I mean I am, but it can´t really hurt us, lightning is the one who does the destructive stuff and what we should be really afraid of. You can´t really compare my experience this morning with the poor people who´ve been in the path of tsunamis or hurricanes but it was very real and scary to me. My heart goes out to all the people in the Caribbean islands that had or will suffer because of hurricane IRMA. It´s heartbreaking. I can´t watch the news because I will start crying….
Thunder is just the sound caused by lightning. Thunder is caused by the rapid expansion of the air surrounding the path of a lightning bolt. Depending on the distance and nature of the lightning, thunder can range from a sharp, loud crack to a long, low rumble….and yes it did rumble this morning. The horror lasted about half an hour before I saw some clear sky and finally was tired again from all that drama, and went back to bed.
I have this very vivid memory of a thunder storm when I was a kid, when me, my mom and my great aunt were counting seconds between the lightning and the thunder(clap). It made the whole thing less scarier and kind of fun! I have used the second counting also as an adult. It calms me and brings back good memories but there is actually a science behind it…..every second represents 300 meters.
When I woke up few hours later it was clear skies, just like nothing ever happened but I know it will again, it is the season….and with the new house, I am more scared than ever because we are not very acquainted yet. It will take some time to know all the strengths and faults.
Then the flood came upon the earth for forty days, and the water increased and lifted up the ark, so that it rose above the earth…
