It´s no secret I have allergies and now our little Missy has allergies as well and we have been battling this since this winter. She is scratching and licking herself like crazy, especially the ears. At some point they were super red and we didn´t know what else to do so we went to see our VET.
How did we know it was allergies….?
Pruritus (itching) is the hallmark sign of allergies. Dogs exhibit itching either by licking or chewing the skin or scratching with their feet. Common areas affected are the face, ears, feet, belly, and armpit region.
Common environmental allergens include dust mites, fleas, molds and pollens from grasses, trees, weeds, and flowers. Dogs may also have food allergies or food intolerance to certain ingredients, such as beef, chicken, fish, and soy.
Nothing else seemed to help. The only drug that saved us was APOQUEL. This is what our vet prescribed. We are done with our pills now and we were considering refilling UNTIL I read an article that said DO NOT GIVE THIS DRUG to your dog because it´s actually very dangerous. Although we were super happy for 30 days, no worries at all, I vote to not to poison my dog.
APOQUEL tablets contain 3.6 mg, 5.4 mg, or 16 mg of oclacitinib as oclacitinib maleate per tablet. It was really a gift from heaven BUT…..
APOQUEL may increase the chances of developing serious infections, and may cause existing parasitic skin infestations or pre-existing cancers to get worse. APOQUEL has not been tested in dogs receiving some medications including some commonly used to treat skin conditions such as corticosteroids and cyclosporine.
This scratching is driving me nuts and it´s driving our dog nuts, she keeps on shaking her head (like 30 times per minute) and scratching her ears and licking her paws etc. It is very nerveracking and is literally pissing me off to the point I am yelling at her but I know it is not her fault. And I feel horrible. But it looks like there is no relief from it. And she is a super anxious dog as well, if you combine these two it is your worst nightmare.
What we have done so far?
For about 3 months we only fed her turkey and sweet potato mash (elimination diet). No dry food at that time. Every weekend I was frying her turkey and mashing her sweet potatoes for the upcoming week.
Then we did a month of APOQUEL.
For a week we have given her Claritin but that makes the itching worse. We need to stop that.
As of yesterday I started giving her oatmeal and rice with chicken. Oatmeal should help with the itching.
And this morning I added a little plain yogurt to her food (Plain and probiotic yogurt keeps good bacteria in your dog’s tummy)
We have a thunder jacket for her anxiety and yesterday we also bought a spray for it (lavender and chamomile).
I am also thinking of making chamomile tea and spraying it on her skin (The chilled tea kills yeast and bacteria on the skin and relieves inflammation)
Every week we are trying to help her (AND US) with her itching but nothing really has helped so far so hopefully this new diet will work. I will try to cure her naturally but it takes a long time…..
I just don´t don´t know any more……
Do you have any tips for me? What else should I do or try?
